Bernese Mountain Dog Puppies for Sale

Bernese Puppy girl

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a family dog. They are calm and get along well with children, making them perfect for families with small children. The Bernese Mountain Dog breed has been around since the 1800’s and was originally used as a guard dog on Swiss farms because of their large size. They were later bred to be companions and farm dogs in Switzerland. If you’re looking for an amazing companion that will protect your family, then look no further than the Bernese Mountain Dog!

I love my two Bernese Mountain Dogs, and it has been so much fun breeding them and having Bernese Mountain dog puppies. Still, Bernese mountain dogs aren’t for everyone, so I thought I’d do a quick summary and answer some of the FAQs I get. In the end, I want our Bernese puppies going home and being the right fit and help people find the perfect puppy, so keep reading for more info.

How big are Bernese Mountain Dogs?

Adult Bernese Mountain Dogs can grow up to 27 inches in height and typically weight between 100-140 pounds. Males are generally larger than females, reaching their full size around the age of two years old.

Yes, that does sound overwhelming and even scary. I know a lot of people are afraid of dogs just because they are big. In most cases, Bernese Mountain Dogs are gentle giants. They are good family dogs and love their people. They tend to always look happy and have a great personality. My boy Finn has always by my side since a young age. He is the most loyal dog I’ve ever had.

How much do Bernese Mountain Dogs Bark?

Bernese Mountain Dogs are known to be very vocal dogs. They love making sounds and barking, but they do it for a reason. They were bred to be farm dogs, so barking was their way of protecting the herd and warning their owners. My Bernese are quiet for the majority of the day. They only bark when there is some sort of action. That could be something walking in front of our house or a kid running around.

The point is I don’t think they bark more than any other dog. It’s the farm dog in them and their natural urge to stand guard and protect the house.

How much do Bernese Mountain Dogs Shed?

This is the one thing that will turn away most home owners. Bernese Mountain dogs do shed… a lot! That’s why Bernedoodles are starting to grow in popularity. Anyway, The Bernese have thick, beautiful coats that are made for the mountains. It does shed. I’ve found that it comes off in big clumps, but there are individual hairs that find their way into everything.

Truthfully, it can be annoying, but it’s part of the breed and something that can be dealt with. One, brushing them daily will get rid of most of it. You can also take them to a groomer and have them deal with the undercoat. Two, buy some Roombas or other robot vacuums. We’ve got two, and they do most of the cleaning for me.

What health problems do they have?

The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the healthiest large breeds. The average life expectancy for a healthy Bernese Mountain dog is between six to eight years old. We are feeding our dogs a completely RAW diet, and I’m hoping that extends their lives to over 10 years.

They tend to have the same health problems all big breeds have: hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat or gastric torsion, and cancer. Most of these aren’t horrible and the others can be avoided.

Are Bernese puppies lazy?

Most puppies are going to be lazy for the first several months. They basically eat and sleep. At around 4 weeks, they will start running around and playing. Still, the majority of the day is sleeping. As they get older, they will become more active. Even though the breed is large, they are relatively active. Mine love running around the yard and tugging on toys.

How many puppies do Bernese mountain dogs have?

This is another common question I get. The answer, it depends on the breeder. Bernese Mountain Dog litters can range anywhere from one to 11 puppies! It really varies based on factors like age and health of mom dog. For our first litter, which was an accident, we had 5 puppies. Finn and Ellie only tied once, so I’m sure we would have had more if we had let them freely breed.

Bigger dogs usually have smaller litters, so the Bernese Mountain dog is no exception. Most will average around 8. This means it might be harder to find Bernese Mountain dog puppies because they are a rare breed and the small amount of puppies. Many people will have to get on a waitlist to get a new puppy.

At this point, I’m not doing a waitlist because I don’t know how many puppies to expect, and don’t want to hold onto people’s money for a long time. Instead, when we have Bernese Mountain dog puppies for sale, I send out an email and then it’s first come.

How much do Bernese Mountain Dog puppies cost?

Bernese Mountain Dog puppies will cost different amounts all over the country and from breeder to breeder. It will depend if they are registered through the American Kennel Club and lineage and other factors. In general, they are a more expensive dog, so expect to pay over $1500. Right now, we are charging $1800 if you don’t plan on breeding, but most likely that price will increase on our next litter. I wrote a whole article about the cost of a Bernese Mountain dog puppy, so check that out if you want to go into more detail.

How do I pick a Bernese puppy?

Soon, the new owners will be choosing which puppy they want. This can be a tough decision. You want to find the perfect puppy, but how do you know which is the best fit?

Some will choose based on appearance. Is the dog big? Cute? Fit the breeds normal AKC requirements? This is a good idea in general, especially if you are planning on breeding. For others, though, there are things more important than appearance.

You have to ask yourself what type of puppy and dog you are wanting. Some people want a dog that is very energetic, others want calm, some want protective or maybe good with kids. Maybe you have a farm and want him or her to herd livestock or pull carts.

Puppies will adjust to their environment and training, but you can still see some of their temperament early on. You can see how intelligent they are or active. Do they get along with other dogs or tend to be alone? Make sure to talk to the breeders about these things and have a conversation. You’ll have this dog for a long time, and it’s an important choice.
